Documentary on Birth of the World Academy of Art and Science and its major milestones intertwined in the social evolution of humanity in the last 75 years.

The e-conference, WAAS@60—A Planetary Moment, marked the 60th anniversary of the founding of the World Academy of Art and Science. It reflected on the unique mission, character and work of the Academy and explored innovative ways in which it can respond to current and emerging challenges. As leading scientists and artists of the world envisioned in 1960, the Academy serves as a forum for leaders, scholars and thinkers to address the pressing challenges confronting humanity from a transnational, transdisciplinary perspective independent of political boundaries and prevailing orthodoxies. WAAS was founded on faith in the power of original and creative ideas—Real Ideas with effective power—to provide leadership in thought that leads to action.

The universal human right to reliable information can only be achieved through responsible journalism free from political agenda, commercial incentives and cultural biases. The adoption of Global Charter of Ethics for Journalists by journalist unions around the world in 2019 based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights confirms the importance and timeliness of this issue and calls for appropriate instruments to foster adherence. A global monitoring and ranking system prepared by impartial experts to evaluate the objectivity, neutrality and reliability of information from major news services could provide recognition to institutions with the highest standards and provide readers with valuable assistance in their selection of news sources – similar to the ranking of universities. This session will explore possible models and means for promoting global standards and measures for news journalism and social media as essential for protecting human rights and promoting effective decision-making, mature democracies and social cohesion.

This is a momentous planetary moment. It presents both a severe challenge and a rare opportunity to generate extraordinary planetary momentum. Both motivation and leadership are essential. The threat of pending crises provides the motivation. The leadership can come in many forms and from a wide range of stakeholders, as explored in the UN-WAAS project GL-21 in 2020. This session will focus on the potential role for WAAS and an expanding network of partner organizations as potential catalysts of that movement — like that which led to the birth of the UN system following two horrendous world wars or the unexpected end of the Cold War and nuclear arms race and led to the rapid democratization, unification of Europe, and birth of WWW as the first truly global social organization.

The Pandemic presents humanity with the dilemma of trying to reconcile individual freedom with the safety of the collective. It juxtaposes the efficiency of social authority with the messy disorder of individual freedom. The individual represents the conscious peak of the social collective and plays an indispensable role in its evolution. The collective is the gene bank of all human aspirations and capacities for social evolution. Neither can thrive without the other. This session contemplates their interdependent and complementary roles in a comprehensive theory of change, social development and social evolution and seeks more effective ways to reconcile social harmony with individual rights and cultural diversity.

This virtual retrospective, hosted by the artist, explores how scientific innovations aimed at serving the needs of humankind are breaking the delicate balance between nature and humanity. Art and science both strive to understand the secrets of existence and harness this knowledge for the future. Margolin’s art explores a wide range of topics including ecology, genetics, the space race, evolution, and more, to build a bridge between a rational understanding of science and technology, and an imaginary world filled with creativity and trepidation towards the unknown.

The Anthropocene and the Noosphere are the two major paradigms that have begun to make sense at global level, yet they have developed mostly in isolation from each other. A balanced understanding of the global transformation will require the insights of both paradigms. This session will explore a paradigmatic dialogue between the two perspectives to construct an information society that is ethically sound. What is the best strategy to stress and invest more on information ethics? The most important questions when considering science, engineering and technology are: What do we want to do with them? Why do we want to do it with a specific kind of technology? How can we do this in a manner that enriches our lives?

What would be its value? What would be the essential requirements? What steps can be taken to create it?
